New CoH comics writer (after Waid)

I was telling Frosty some of this last night, but thought I’d try to write it out more coherently:

Starting with issue four, the new writer of The CoH comic will be Troy Hickman (who received Eisner nominations for Best short Story and Best Anthology for his Common Grounds comic from Top Cow.) Troy also happens to be an old friend of mine. He told me he had a shot at the CoH job months ago, but he asked me not to say anything.

Back in the Nineties I was in a small press comic co-op called the UFO. I put out such memorable photocopier comics as Dead Frogs on the Ceiling and other Incoherent Ramblings, Pizzazz and Frog-Boy, Amazing Colossal Saucerhead Adventure Stories, and my personal favorite, The Burp Boy and Upchuck, Dog Wonder Show.

Troy was also in the UFO at this time, publishing Tales of the Pathetic Club and Holey Crullers (the book now known as Common Grounds.) This was before any of us had email, so we had to rely on snail mail to keep in touch. I did get to meet him in the flesh at one of the Chicago Comic Cons (before Wizard bought it.)

Though I haven’t done much comic work the last few years, I have kept up with the small press scene. The internet has made that easier. There used to be a Sunday night chat at smallpresscomics.com I went to almost every week before the chat room died. Now I go to a Tuesday night chat at http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/. Several of my old friends show up there, sometime even Troy. Like last night. He told me I could talk about him being the CoH comic writer now, seeing as how Newsarama had already released the news. He does play CoH when he has time, but I don’t think he has any high level characters. I told him he should come here if he needed any help with the game story background. At this point he doesn’t plan to put any of his friends characters (or mine) in the comic.

On a slightly different topic, the Dimestore chat is hosted by another old UFO friend of mine, Ian Shires. He is also a writer and he’s looking to bring back his old mini comic, Dungar, as a full size comic. I may get to be the artist. He is sending me a script so that I can see if I can do the art fast enough, in 8 weeks or so. I don’t know myself if I can do it that fast, but if I can, I will work for him for at least two years, profit sharing if the book makes a profit. If I do get this job, it will likly cut back on my CoH playing.

Heh...

First off love the first character name in your .sig - I spent many an hour in my youth watching that show.

Normally I'd say following Mark Waid would be something I wouldn't wish on anyone on a colaborative series. But really, I felt his storyline was so far outside the "game", that you'll very likely outshine him.

I look forward too it.

Hey! My ears were burning so I thought I'd better stop by...lol. Anyway, regarding what you guys were talking about, yeah, I'm doing #4-6, and it looks like Dan Jurgens is doing #7-9. Not sure about after that, though I'd certainly like to do more (I'd love to be the regular writer, but I don't know what the odds of that would be). So far it's been a great deal of fun, and a bit challenging, too. My arc won't really fill in much more detail about the game world, as I mainly focus on fleshing out the characters. It's certainly set in the CoH universe, though, and I've played the game long enough that I think I have a fair feeling for it. So I hope you'll let me know whatcha think.

BTW Troy is only doing issue 4-6. It looks like Waid is having the comic be a round robin of authors always going back to him as his schedule warrants.

Well, after talking to Bul, I finally got around to reading Hickman's "Common Grounds" and I have to admit that it was really really good!! The characters in the stories were all so very real, like people you might know from around your neighborhood.

I can't recommend this enough to everyone, and thanks Bul for turning me on to this book! If I can find time within the next few daysm I will try and do a review of it and post it in our comics section.

I hope you don't mind, but I've tagged a short paragraph about this onto the wikipedia page for CoH under the comic section:

Troy himself, and his comic did not have entries there.

Hickman interview

Here is a short interview about what Troy will be doing in CoH 4-6.

It would be really neat if they could plan the story in the comic to coincide with an in-game event, but getting the comic release to synchronize with the update would be more difficult. Maybe if CoH did monthly updates like AC they could do it, but I remember the AC updates not always coming out on time. I'll see if I can get Troy's thoughts on this, either at tonights chat or by email.

He's welcome to come here any time.

Like I said in the other thread I sort of feel right now that the new comic is even more off track then the old one was. The story is just too meta-game, when in fact I think people want to be getting stories that fill in holes in the game. For example, how exactly was magic involved in Tyrant's takeover of Warrior (or Praetorian) Earth (this is evidenced by the tattered Circle of Thorn banners in his throne room).

The new story right now is hard for me to swallow because it implies that starting next week none of the characters will have powers in game for six weeks (at least). I think that's poor taste, all it does in my mind is set the story in some other Paragon City, not the one we play in.

And I think its important for the comic book to be about the Paragon City we play in.
