I loved the Elementals...
I think I still have those comics somewhere
(And the V&V module too )
-----------------------
Ms Mystic - Kinetics / Psychic Defender
Shrike - Energy / Energy Blaster
Red Razorback - Spines / Regeneration Scrapper
American Dreams - Martial Arts / Invuln Scrapper
Oddly I forgot to mention that I spent an entire summer running a D&D campaign where we played the original JB/CC X-Men stranded in a fantasy world. It worked out well.
And the other great V&V artist was Bill Willingham, and he went on to do great things comic book-wise like the Elementals -- which actually has its entire first plot based on his original notes for a two part V&V module he wrote.

My first Superhero RPG was a rollplay experience. I started out with Heroes Unlimited by Paladium.
To this day I am not sure how I feel about that system, at times I think it is just a poor mish-mosh of rules and tables, and at other times I think I get what their intent was and can almost see it while playing.
Normally though, its just a collection of books sitting around and collecting dust because everyone I know refuses to play anything from them.

Graphics in 1995. Guess they forgot about the D&D games for the 2600 and Colecovision
And I guess the ASCII version of Ultima I from 1982 (?) don't count.
I've played about a dozen systems. I prefered Hero, but mostly because I'm a math geek, which you really need to be to play that system. GURPS isn't a bad system its just a bit lordly about how you should play. I'm not a big fan of being told how to do things.
My first Superhero RPG was Villains & Vigilantes. This is also the game system Starmaster was first created under. V&V was great because it was the best possbile game system for easy pick up and play. The whole manual is abotu 80 pages. The rules are simplistic, and relatively free form. Thus putting the emphasis on role instead of roll.

I liked that nearly any character type could be created or brought over. Superheros, Dwarves, a Martial Artist and a Alien in your group? Sure... just make sure you don't go over the 250 mark.

Also in typical media fashion they have no clue about what they're saying. "handful of Dungeons & Dragons types" -- what does that even mean?

Maybe it's me, long-time MMO player that I am (I guess), but this article looks like every other article that is every written about MMO's and published in a general circulation medium. And worst, it wasn't even thoroughly researched and offered very little insight beyond the superficial layer they examined.
How nice of the writer to portray(sp?) all real life meetings between gamers as awkwards events that should be shunned! I didn't realize it until I read his article that I really don't like all the people I have met in RL that I play MMO's with. Thank God I have this article to set me straight and tell me that what I thought I enjoyed was a lie and that I really was suffering!
I don't know how Starmaster and Miss Dale can put up with allowing people to drop by their place for extended awkward moments. You poor souls.
Seriously, what a fluff piece with very little redeeming value.

I actually don't know the history of Verant, and when I read it thought, maybe it was origianlly Verdant

From the article:
"MMO games were regarded as a niche pastime for a handful of Dungeons & Dragons types until a San Diego company, Verdant Interactive, launched EverQuest in spring 1999."
You'd *think* a San Diego-based news service would at least know how to spell Verant.
Intersting, though I thought the writing in the article is a little flat. Most interesting thing in it is that Sigil finally decided their game title (didn't realize that -- too bad it looks same old, or I suppose with designers from EQ it should be anything but).

Did you hate all versions of the D&D game, or was it just the older versions?
Personally, I am a big fan of the current game edition and enjoy playing it. Next to the classic game system from Deadlands, it's my favorite.
