Release Notes

Program: TweakCoH
Latest Version: 2.1.0.0
Date: 03/08/2007
Copyright: (c) 2004-2007 by Todd D. Perlmutter, all rights reserved

Functionality/Use

Remember all settings are made prior to running the game client and will not affect an already running client. Don't forget you may want to check for any Additional Files you might need to use this program.

NOTE: During startup and when switching between option sets you will be presented with a progress dialog to indicate that TweakCoH is initializing. The same dialog is presented when applying changes.

NOTE: Instead of sliders taking up precious GUI real estate, sliders will now popup when certain combo boxes are selected. See below for more info.

NOTE: This program will work under Windows Vista, however to be able to turn on/off or modify the DNS Client Service you will need to run it as an Administrator using the right-context menu. Any issues you might have with PathPing or Traceroute (tracert) are issues with your OS config and not problems with this program (check your firewall).

TweakCoH Settings From the top part of the GUI:

  • Use the Settings forcombo box to select whether you are modifying options for your main City of Heroes installation (Coh) or your installation for the Training Room/Test Server (CohTest).
  • Use theIn Game How Tobutton to learn how to adjust your City of Heroes client options while the game is running. The information will be presented in a command info window.
  • Use the Low
    button
to set the options of the current tab to the lowest possible values.
  • Use the Resetbutton to reset the options of the current tab to their last known values - either from startup or from the last time Apply(see below) was pressed.
  • Use the Defaultsbutton to reset the options of the current tab to their City of Heroes client defaults.

NOTE: Reset and Defaultswill only be available if the current tab has options that can be modified.

TweakCoH Bottom From the bottom part of the GUI:

  • Use the OKbutton to save the current changes and exit the program.
  • Use the Cancelbutton to ignore the current changes and exit the program.
  • Use the Applybutton to save the current changes and not exit the program.
  • Use the Aboutbutton to bring up the About TweakCoH dialog. This can also be done with the F1 key.

NOTE: Applywill only be available once at least one option has been modified.

TweakCoH Combo Slider 1
TweakCoH Combo Slider 2
TweakCoH Combo Slider 3
On the left is a basic example of how a popup slider will look as you use it.

The first image displays what appears to be a combo box.

However, instead of popping up a list to make choices from, the combo box will popup a window with a slider. This window will depict the current value both on the slider, and numerically in the title bar of the popup window. It will also display the lowest and highest possible settings for the value being adjusted.

The third image demonstrates that when the value is adjusted by the slider, the title bar will change to reflect the new value.

When you are done, either move the mouse cursor outside of the slider popup window, or close it with the X in the upper right corner.

TweakCoH Basic From the Basic tab:

  • Have the City of Heroes client remember the last account you used to play by checking off Remember Account Name (note: un-checking this will clear current account name).
  • Check the Current Version of the City of Heroes client.
  • Check the Installer Language of the City of Heroes client.
  • Go to the Installation Folder for City of Heroes.
  • Go to the Start Menu Folderfor City of Heroes.

TweakCoH Display From the Displaytab:

  • Toggle between Fullscreen and Windowed Display Mode for City of Heroes using the
    Fullscreen
    checkbox.
  • When Fullscreen is not checked, you can check the Maximized checkbox in order to force the City of Heroes window to take up your entire desktop.
  • Adjust your display Refresh Rate for City of Heroes when Fullscreen is checked. All possible refresh rates for your default monitor will be displayed.

Changing this value will change the possible choices under Screen/UI Resolution both on the Display tab, and on the Demos tab.

NOTE: When Fullscreen is not checked you will need to use your Windows Display settings to change the Refresh Rate.

  • Change your City of Heroes client Display Resolution based on Fixed choices from your graphics card (e.g., 1280x1024) or a Custom resolution.

Warning: Not all resolutions are guaranteed to work, so choose wisely.

  • Modify the 3D Resolution Scaling of City of Heroes, this will allow for your GUI to be drawn and a higher resolution than your 3D display space.
  • Adjust the X Position and Y Position of the Windowed Screen Position when in Windowed mode.

Tip: If you play Fullscreen, keeping your City of Heroes client Display Resolution the same as your desktop resolution and making sure your Desktop Bits per Pixel is set to 32 bits can help your client start faster and avoid screen flickering from resolution changes. You can do this by opening your Windows Operating System Control Panel and choosing Display.

TweakCoH Graphics 1 From the Graphics1 tab:

  • Adjust the Character Texture Quality and the World Texture Quality of your City of Heroes client between Low, Medium, High, andVery High. Higher will produce better looking objects in game, but may impact performance on older computers (newer computers should have no issues leaving this at Very High).
  • Change the World Detail and Character Detail levels for your City of Heroes client. Higher means more detail.
  • Turn Particle Physics on or off for your City of Heroes client.
  • Adjust the Max. Particle Count and Max. Particle Fill for the graphical special effects for your City of Heroes client. Higher means larger more vibrant special effects, but may impact your computer's performance.

  • Turn on Bloom Effects (possible settings are None, Regular, and Heavy) and adjust the Bloom Amount. A higher setting and higher amount will mean better quality, but may also impact your computer's performance.
  • Turn on/off Lightmaps in your City of Heroes client. Turning them on may impact your computer's performance.
  • Adjust your City of Heroes client's Shader Quality (possible settings are Low, Medium, and High. Higher settings will mean better quality, but may also impact your computer's performance.

  • Adjust theTexture Crispness of your City of Heroes client between Smooth, Medium, and Crisp. This setting is really intended for older graphics cards that do not support Anisotropic Filtering, and its use in conjunction with Anisotropic Filtering is therefore not recommended. As such there is a message that will warn you if you set the settings in such a manner, but it will not prevent such settings either. It will read: Not recommended with Anisotropic Filtering
  • Adjust the Gamma setting of your City of Heroes client.

Warning: All settings may not be available here and/or in the CoH GUI

  • The Servers combo box lists a number of City of Heroes related hostnames and their corresponding IP addresses and connection port numbers.
  • Reverse DNS shows the DNS name(s) for the currently selected hostname in the Servers combo box. This name will not necessarily be the same as what is shown in the Servers combo box, and may contain more than one name.
  • Use the PathPing button to run a pathping trace to the currently selected IP address in the Servers combo box. The command used is: pathping -p 25 <IP address>
  • Use the Traceroute button to run a tracert to the currently selected IP address in the Servers combo box. The command used is: tracert <IP address>
  • Use the Connect button to perform a test connection to the currently selected IP address in the Servers combo box on a pre-determined port. A socket connection is made to the port and then immediately closed if successful. An error will be reported on failure.
  • Use the View button to view the currently selected hostname in the Servers combo box in your default web browser.
  • Use the IP Configuration button to generate an IP Configuration listing for your computer in a command info window. The command used is: ipconfig /all

NOTE: The Start Client, Stop Client, Display DNS, and Flush DNS may not be available depending on the current state of the DNS Client windows service.

TIP: The DNS Client windows service is not really a needed service. Its designed to remove the load off of your DNS Server by providing a local DNS cache, but the truth is that DNS Servers are designed to take load. Disabling this service will make things so that you never have to flush your computer's DNS cache ever again.

TweakCoH Demos No Folder
TweakCoH Demos
From the Demos tab:

  • If you have not yet recorded a demo, you may see a message stating that the client_demos folder (typically "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\client_demos" if Settings for is set to Coh) does not exist. You can use the Create Folder button to then create client_demos folder.
  • Use the Play Demo button to play any demos found in the client_demos folder for your current options (Coh or CohTest). Simply select a demo from the combo box, and press the
    Play Demo button.
  • Use the Fullscreen checkbox to play back your demo fullscreen, unchecking it will play back in a window.
  • Change the Screen/UI Resolution of your demo playback based on Fixed choices from your graphics card or choose a Custom resolution. Possible settings are gated by the Refresh Rate setting in the Display tab.

Warning: Not all resolutions are guaranteed to work, so choose wisely.

  • Set the Frames Per Second of your demo playback. This can allow you to get a more favorable playback rate, or watch a demo at an accelerated speed or in slow motion.
  • Disable Text in your demo playback. This means damage numbers and chat bubbles will not be seen.
  • Use Dump to Files during demo playback to output your demo file as a series of screenshots, either JPG or TGA.
  • With the Set File Association button you can use the settings for demo playback to create a Windows Explorer file association for City of Heroes demo files. This will allow you to double click a City of Heroes demo file anywhere in Windows Explorer and have it playback in the City of Heroes client. This may require a reboot, restart, or re-login of Windows to take effect.
